If you know me, you know most of what I wear is thrifted. Thrifting is not only an economical way to expand your wardrobe, but it's also a sustainable choice that allows you to express your unique style. However, navigating thrift stores can be overwhelming if you're not prepared. To help you make the most of your thrift shopping experience, I've compiled my tried and true ten-point guide that will transform you into a savvy and stylish thrift shopper.
1. Shop with a Plan: Before stepping foot into a thrift store, have a clear plan in mind. Research and gather inspiration so you know exactly what you're looking for. Whether it's a specific fashion era, a trendy style, or a particular occasion, having a defined objective will help you stay focused and avoid feeling overwhelmed by the vast selection.
In addition to personal style, always do this when I'm styling shoots for myself or others and need that last piece that will elevate the overall look. Below you will find examples of some of my mood boards that have helped me zero in on what I'm looking for when I go to the thrift store.

2. Know Your Wardrobe: Before hitting the thrift store, take stock of your existing wardrobe. Identify the pieces you already own to avoid purchasing duplicates. Unless it's a staple item you can't live without, focus on expanding your collection with fresh and unique finds. Move out of your comfort zone and add some flair to your wardrobe.
Additionally, know which outfits are missing that special something. Maybe a new accessory or layer for a specific look you already have is what you should be on the lookout for. 3. Flatter Yourself: Understanding your body type and knowing what colors flatter your complexion is key to finding treasures that make you look and feel fabulous. Keep in mind that thrift stores offer a vast array of styles, so take advantage of the opportunity to experiment and discover new looks that enhance your natural beauty.
If you've never heard of color analysis, I insist you find your season immediately. Wearing colors in your season enhances your natural features, taking your look to the next level. I was floored when I discovered I had ZERO clothes in my palette, and when I started wearing MY specific colors, I felt like a new person.
4. Buy What You Love: While thrift shopping is known for its affordability, cost shouldn't be the sole determining factor for your purchases. I can't tell you how many times I came home with garments I never touched again simply because I couldn't pass on the price. Even if the cost is low, avoid wasteful purchases. Ensure that you genuinely love an item before buying it. Thrift stores are filled with hidden gems, so be patient and wait for that special piece (or five) that capture your heart. 5. Look Beyond Brand Names: Don't be swayed by popular brand names when thrift shopping. The label alone doesn't guarantee style or suitability. Instead, prioritize the overall look and fit of the clothing. Explore different brands and discover lesser-known labels that offer quality and uniqueness at a fraction of the price. The exception here is if you're planning to resell your pieces. 6. Explore Different Thrift Stores: Each thrift store has its own distinct inventory and vibe. Expand your thrifting horizons by visiting various stores in your area. Some stores specialize in vintage clothing, while others offer contemporary and retro styles. Broaden your options and increase your chances of finding hidden treasures by exploring different thrift stores. 7. Be Open to Alterations: When thrift shopping, keep in mind that alterations can transform an average find into a spectacular piece. Don't shy away from items that are slightly off in terms of fit or style. If you have basic sewing skills or access to a tailor, consider how simple alterations can personalize and elevate your thrifted treasures.
If sewing or paying a tailor isn't your thing, consider how you can change a garment with a pair of scissors and some creativity. In the image below I cut the lining out of a thrifted bridesmaid dress and paired it with a second-hand high school football uniform belt.

8. Inspect for Quality: Thrift stores carry a wide range of items, so it's essential to inspect the quality of each piece before purchasing. Check for any signs of wear, loose seams, or missing buttons. Additionally, examine the fabric composition and care labels to ensure the garment is durable and suits your lifestyle. You can get away with discounted purchases on damaged items if you're only styling a photoshoot, but when buying for daily wear, details matter. 9. Embrace Accessories: Thrift stores aren't limited to clothing alone. Explore the accessory section for one-of-a-kind jewelry, scarves, belts, and handbags. Accessories can significantly enhance and diversify your outfits, allowing you to create unique looks without breaking the bank. Don't let your outfits go without those special finishings that really pack a punch. 10. Donate and Recycle: Thrift shopping is a cyclical process. When your style evolves or you no longer wear certain items, consider donating or reselling your items. This is what makes thrifting sustainable in a world where fast fashion rules. It also helps to save on space, because believe me... once you find your stride, those closets will fill up quickly!
Thrift shopping is a budget-friendly and sustainable way to discover unique fashion treasures. By following these ten points, you'll become a savvy thrift shopper who can curate a stylish wardrobe while being mindful of your budget and the environment. Now, it's time to spread the thrifting love! Share this article with a fashionable friend and embark on thrifting adventures together.
